Why do my young fruit trees get huge spikes on new growth?

Citrus are often grafted to encourage hardier and more vigorous plants. Thorny growth that appears on the lower trunk of your citrus tree is from the Trifoliata rootstock – if it isn’t removed the thorny growth will develop into branches and quickly take over the fruiting part of your tree.
