Hi we are planning to make our side garden which is 4 metres long by half a metre wide into a succulent garden with rocks succulents and creeping plants (alyssum lobelia etc) as well. Could you please tell me what sort of soil should i have for these plants normal everyday soil with compost added or do succulents require something extra. This garden gets full sun and is quite dry. I live in Te Awamutu so in winter we get frosts but will be covering it with frost cloth anyway.
Thank you for your help
Kind Regards

Hi,

I bought this Button Bush couple month back from Palmers Rotorua, and I grew it in the pot approx size 5×5 and now starting to look yellowish-not greenish color. What should I do to help this plant back to normal?

As well as for my Boronia, same case. Appreciate if you could give me some advice for it.

Thank you.

Hi,

I recently bought a fig tree from Palmers but as soon as I planted it in to its new home (large pot) it lost all its leaves and looks like it’s dying.

Do fig trees typically suffer when transplanted and it’s likely it will spring back to good health once it has settled? Or is it a sign of an inappropriate environment or compost and it needs urgent attention?

Thanks,
Barbara

We have a clay slope in our backyard which we want to plant out on. What plants will grow well in clay and are easy to maintain on a slope as it is not an area that is easy to get to or maintain?

Thanks

Hi. I have 8 young avocado trees, and on the 2 Hass (on Zutano) ones there is a small area on a branch that has white growth on it. Under that is a brown discolouration with evenly spaced dots in the bark. I’d love to know what this is and what to do about it.
thanks

I’ve a steep bank in partial sun that’s been covered in thickets of Budleia and Clematis up until yesterday when we tore them all out. The soil is dry as it’s so steep any rain rolls right off. I’ve plenty of compost to lay down, but again it’s so steep I can’t really mulch it. I’d like to plant a vigorous and dense, low-growing ground cover that can hold it together and prevent any weeds sprouting back with as little maintenance as possible – do you have any recommendations?

I have strawberries growing in tubs and to date I have lovely healthy leaves but no flowers yet. Also plenty of runners forming. Should I leave the runners or cut them off which is what I have been doing. These plants are this seasons ones. I thought I would have had strawberries by January.

I would like to ask why I have a few of the small green tamarillos which are not ripe are falling off the tree. Is this normal? I have had about 20 fall off over the last week. The tree is very sheltered and laiden with fruit which are all green.

I am an avid Auckland (Howick) gardener, but cannot grow garlic successfully. I use shop bought Printatur bulbs, planted in June, have changed the sites. I prepared the site with composite and kept them weed free. I planted them root down, covered them with 2-3cm soil.

This year the plants grew strongly with relatively no disease, however when harvested they had no bulbs. They just looked like Spring Onions. Such a disappointment! I would greatly appreciate any ideas.
