Our Rose Buyer’s Top Rose Picks

Roses are loved the world over for so many different reasons; their beautiful flowers, their fragrance, the vast array of varieties available. Here are our top rose picks for the 2021 rose season:

Graham Thomas

Graham Thomas, named after noted English Horticulturist, author and garden desginer Graham Stuart Thomas, is a well known David Austin Rose. Loved for its deep golden yellow cupped blooms which appear in clusters all season long, atop attractive green foliage. The scent, although not the strongest of the Austin roses, is one of light tea with hints of violet. New Zealand’s mild climate gives Graham Thomas a bit of vigour, best grown as a climber on a fence, pergola or wall.

Lemon n Lime

A multi-award winning rose bred by Rob Somerfield of New Zealand. A great rose for picking, Lemon n Lime produces soft lemon coloured blooms with green tinges, on long stems. The green pigment in the petals help them to last well once picked. The foliage is attractive, with its dark glossy leaves.

Gertrude Jekyll

Gertrude Jekyll was a British horticulturist, garden designer, craftswoman, photographer, writer and artist. She created over 400 gardens in the United Kingdom, Europe and the United States, and wrote over 1,000 articles for magazines. Gertrude Jekyll the rose has twice been voted England’s favourite rose. One of the first English Roses to start flowering, its perfect scrolled buds open to large, bright glowing pink rosette shaped flowers. The strong scent is often described as being the quintessential Old Rose fragrance. Gertrude Jekyll is vigorous and will form a medium sized upright shrub.

Sir Edmund Hillary

Appropriately a climbing rose named after a great New Zealander. The rose itself has beautiful snow white blooms with a cream centre. The blooms are very fragrant and the growth habit is strong and health. Let this beauty climb to lofty heights in your garden.

Ingrid Bergman

Named after the award winning Swedish Actress of the same name. An award winning rose with large shapely flowers of bright red on strong stems. Good spicy scent. Glossy, dark green foliage.
