Pea Climbing Telephone is probably the most popular variety of climbing pea. It produces well-filled pods with beautiful sweet flavour. A tall variety which needs support, the pods can be picked over a long period. A hardy annual growing to a height of 2m.
Soil should be well prepared with compost and/or aged manure prior to sowing.
Prepare flat trenches 15cm wide and 5cm deep. Pair seeds in a zig-zag fashion along the middle of the trench allowing 7.5cm between seeds. Fill in with soil and gently firm down.
Best sown into dark/damp soil where further water is not required until seedlings emerge. Where more than one row of peas is required allow 1m between rows.
Keep well watered and mulch to assist with water retention.
Further fertilising is not required as legumes produce their own nitrogen. Sow in late Autumn through to Spring; earlier in cooler zones.
