Runner Bean Scarlet Runner produce long flavoursome pods on attractive plants and are an excellent source of vitamin C, folate and fibre. Pick at regular and frequent intervals to increase harvest. Sow Spring to mid-Summer in cool and cold districts, 2.5cm deep where they are to grow. Space 15cm apart in rows 1m apart. Water well particularly in dry spells. Train young seedlings up trellis, netting, bean frames or form a wooden tripod. Runner Beans develop an extensive root system so will be at their best in well dug and manured soil. Seedlings emerge 7-10 days. Sow in spring and summer.

Unlike other beans, runner beans do not self pollinate & will need help from beneficial insects.
During high evening temperatures, flowers may not set & will fall off. Spraying flowers with a fine mister spray will assist with pod set.
