How to Grow Nandina Gulf Stream

Nandina domestica ‘Gulf Stream’ is one of the best compact shrubs for year-round foliage interest. This hardy evergreen with its bamboo like appearance boasts multi coloured foliage turning to rich red in cooler months. Its easy care compact habit and colour make it compatible with all modern home decor and garden landscapes. It features a variety of leaf colors on a fairly dense, evergreen plant. New growth is bronze with orange tints. Older leaves range from blue-green to gold and red.

It can tolerate most climatic situations throughout New Zealand, best suited to direct sun in good soils. Unlike other heavenly bamboos, it is bushy and compact, reaching up to one metre in height. Nandina Gulf Stream is a fabulous foliage plant ideal for mass or container planting, it makes a fine informal hedge or can be used as a foundation planting.

Nandina Gulf Stream prefers partial to full sun and thrives with weekly watering. If your Gulf Stream is in a container or extreme heat, you will need to water more frequently than once per week. This shrub blooms from spring to summer, producing pretty white flowers. Complement the dissected leaves of heavenly bamboo with large-leafed evergreen shrubs such as rhododendrons.
